DIBRUGARH: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Friday staged a protest in front of Lezai-Kalakhowa Mahatma Gandhi Model Hospital in Dibrugarh for lack of emergency services in the hospital.
The protesters raised slogans against the government for failing to provide emergency services in the hospital.
“Assam Medical College and Hospital is 25 km from the Lezai-Kalakhowa area, and 58 villages are dependent on this hospital, but the hospital could not provide basic medical treatment to the people. The hospital has an anti-venom unit but it is not functional,” said a protester.
He said, “No operation theatre is available in the hospital. The people of the villages are facing immense problems. The health services are very poor because no doctors are available during night hours. Gynaecologists are also not available in the hospital.”
Another protester said, “The model hospital was opened for the people of this area, and if emergency services are not available in the hospital, then how will the poor people of the villages get treatment during crucial hours? AMCH is far away from us, and if a patient needs immediate treatment, then how will he get the treatment if doctors and health workers are not available?
“We demand that the Assam Chief Minister and Health Minister provide basic and emergency facilities in the hospital,” said a woman protester.
