SIVASAGAR: In order to highlight the government's inaction in addressing their demands for safeguarding the identity and rights of Indigenous people, the All Assam Tai Ahom Students' Union (AATASU) organized a "Gana Hamabekh," a large-scale gathering on Tuesday, March 25, at Boarding Field in Sivasagar.

Leaders and participants voiced concerns over issues affecting the Tai Ahom and other indigenous communities, stressing the need for constitutional safeguards, land rights and recognition of their heritage. The event saw a significant turnout, reflecting the growing frustration among the people over the government's alleged failure to meet their longstanding demands.

Earlier, the All Assam Tai Ahom Students’ Union (AATASU) held a protest in Sivasagar, urging the government to take proper steps to preserve ancient Ahom-era monuments. Over 500 members and supporters participated in a march from the local boarding field to Dolomukh Chariali, where they staged a demonstration.

AATASU blamed the authorities for neglecting these historical sites, leading to their deterioration and illegal encroachment. Although a district survey identified more than 500 monuments, little effort has been made to protect them, as per allegations.

The union set a deadline for the government to take action, emphasizing the cultural and historical importance of these monuments. AATASU President Basanta Gogoi stressed the need for immediate restoration to safeguard Assam’s heritage.
