GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that over 80% of households in the state now have tap water connections under the Central government's Har Ghar Jal initiative. This was mentioned during a meeting with Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in the capital.

Launched in 2019 under the Jal Jeevan Mission, the program Har Ghar Jal focuses on providing 55 litres of piped water to every rural household of the country by 2024. The tremendous progress of Assam, therefore, reflects the efforts of the state to bring this vision into a reality.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Sarma requested the Union Minister to continue his support so that the scheme could be covered in all parts of the state. Patil assured him that the Ministry of Jal Shakti would provide all possible help to make the scheme a success.

High-ranking officials from the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita attended the discussions.

CM Sarma appreciated the progress made so far and reiterated his commitment to achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of tap water for all. The Prime Minister and the Chief Minister had a meeting earlier in the day to discuss Assam's bigger development aspirations.

The government is hopeful of reaching full coverage in the near future, and this accomplishment represents a significant advancement in rural water infrastructure.
