SILCHAR: Reacting sharply to the comment made by Prashanta Chakrabarty, the General Secretary of the Bangla Sahitya Sabha, Asom, that the Assam University was the result of the Assam Accord, the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students Association (ACKHSA) on Friday demanded apology from him. Rupam Nandi Purkayastha, the Chief Advisor of the ACKHSA, while addressing a press meet here, made a scathing attack on Chakrabarty and warned him not to create division among various communities of the state with false and fabricated interpretation of history. Purkayastha, now an active member of the district BJP, further said that the ACKHSA would resist the entry of Chakrabarty in the Barak Valley until he tenders his unconditional apology to the people of the valley.
On May 19, during a seminar at the Assam University as a part of observance of the 11 Language Martyrs of the Barak Valley, Prashanta Chakrabarty in his speech said that the Assam University was the result of the Assam Accord. The seminar was attended by Basanta Goswami, the President of Axam Xahitya Xabha, who led a delegation of the apex literary body of the state to the Barak Valley to pay homage to the language martyrs and assured that the Xabha would appeal to the government to respond positively to the mass demand of the Barak Valley for renaming the Silchar Railway Station after the 11 martyrs. While Goswami’s stance was highly appreciated by the people of the Barak Valley, Chakrabarty’s comment on the history of establishment of the central university had vehemently been criticized by various quarters. Amid this controversy, the ACKHSA on Friday demanded an apology from Chakrabarty.
