SILCHAR: An Advanced Blood Component Separation Unit was inaugurated by local MLA Dipayan Chakrabarty at SM Dev Civil Hospital here in Silchar today.

Chakraborty said that with the installation, no patient in Silchar would suffer due to the unavailability of the right blood components at the right time. This facility would ensure that every drop of donated blood is used to its fullest potential, saving multiple lives in the process.

Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav said previously that the lack of component separation meant patients received whole blood transfusions, which were not always the most effective treatment. Now, with the availability of Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBC), Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), Platelets (PLC), and Cryoprecipitate, targeted treatment could easily be offered to the patients.

The new unit follows stringent storage protocols to preserve the efficacy of blood components: PRBC can be stored for up to 45 days at 2-8°C, platelets for up to five days at 22-24°C, and fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate for up to a year at -40°C to -80°C.
