Margherita: In a press release, the Margherita Regional Committee of the Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) harshly criticised the Margherita Co-District administration and police for failing to stop the illegal gambling that has been going on for several months, especially in areas like Namdang Tea Estate, Dirok Tea Estate, Ledo Tea Estate, Margherita Tea Estate, Margherita Chariali, and Bargolai Bazaar under Margherita Co-District.
Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Margherita Regional committee general secretary Utpal Borah accused certain vested interest individuals of running illegal gaming operations, misleading the poor, primarily tea garden workers, and embezzling their hard-earned money.
Tea garden workers have become a soft target of the illegal gambling game known as "Double Gutti," which is very popular in the tea garden areas of Margherita Co-District. However, neither the Margherita police nor the Margherita Co-District administration have been able to stop the ongoing illegal gambling activities, alleged Utpal Borah.
Additionally, Bookies (Sattebaaz) have already hired agents in Margherita in anticipation of the ICC Champions Trophy and IPL cricket tournaments, which are scheduled to begin in February and March. According to Utpal Borah, AJYCP urged the Margherita Co-District administration and Margherita police to closely monitor anyone who may be involved in illegal gambling activities, as this type of betting has already destroyed hundreds of families. If they are unable to stop the ongoing illegal gambling activities, AJYCP will have to launch a series of protests on the streets of Margherita, he said.
