GUWAHATI: To address serious charges of corruption and misconduct pertaining to the forthcoming Panchayat elections in Assam, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has formed a three-member Investigation Committee. The move is intended to conduct a detailed probe into the allegations against party workers, holding them accountable and transparent within the organization.
The committee will be headed by Paban Singh Ghatowar, former Union Minister, and will include RP Sarmah, former member of Parliament, and Bobbeeta Sharma, vice-president of APCC, as members. APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah made the announcement of the committee in an official order issued on Saturday, asserting the party's seriousness in addressing these charges.
Borah stated that the committee will look into various complaints related to the Panchayat elections, including irregularities in ticket distribution, allegations of cash-for-ticket transactions, and instances of candidates withdrawing nominations without explanation. The committee is tasked with determining the culpability of any accused party members and has the authority to summon individuals for testimony, prioritizing attendance over campaign responsibilities.
The committee is expected to submit its findings by May 7, just before the elections, which are scheduled to take place in two phases: the first on May 2 across 14 districts and the second on May 7 in the remaining 13 districts. The deadline for filing nominations was April 11, with vote counting set for May 11.
