Assam: Awareness meeting on Child Protection Mechanism organized in Biswanath

BISWANATH CHARIALI: An awareness meeting on Child Protection Mechanism was organized at the office of the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Biswanath with all the media houses. Prastuti Bhuyan, District Child Protection Officer, Biswanath, spoke on Mission Vatsalya and its objectives. She informed that the office of the DCPU was established in Biswanath district in 2018 and since then the DCPU has been working for child protection and child rights and also ensuring the safety and security of the children in the district under DCPU, a Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), which work for the child in Need of Care and Protection and Child in Conflict with the law, respectively.

Prativa Konwar, Supervisor, Child Helpline Unit (CHL), Biswanath, spoke on the functioning of the child helpline number (1098). She also mentioned that the office of the CHL was established in the district in 2024 and since then the officials have been providing emergency service to children from 0 to 18 years of age in the district round the clock.

Moti Kumar Newar, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Biswanath, illustrated the functioning of the committee and its role and responsibilities towards Child in Need of Care and Protection. He also spoke on the guidelines proposed by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) for media-reporting on children.

It may be mentioned here that there are two children homes in the district under Mission Vatsalya institutional care services-one is Gramin Child Care Institution at Golia, where 6-18 years of children are given shelter and the other is Specialized Adoption Agency (SAA) at Kochgaon where 0-6 years of children are given shelter under Mission Vatsalya through which sponsorship, adoption, foster care, and after care services are available under non-institutional care services. Altogether, 118 beneficiaries under the sponsorship scheme were benefited.

The meeting also held a discussion regarding the legal process of adoption. If any parent wants to adopt a child legally, they can contact SAA, DCPU, CWC, CHL, or can directly register themselves under CARINGS by filling up the form and uploading the relevant documents.
