BARPETA: The makeshift market outside Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMCH) in Assam's Barpeta is undergoing a significant transformation, led by proactive steps from local vendors.

Around 50 stalls in the market sell food, clothes, fruits, and vegetables, providing livelihoods to nearly 500 people. To improve its condition, vendors have formed the FAAMC Temporary Market Committee (FTMC) to look after cleanliness, order, and safety.

The committee's primary goals include setting up proper entry points, maintaining hygiene, regulating garbage disposal, and preventing illegal activities. The FTMC has already initiated cleanliness drives, installed dustbins, and restricted the entry of new traders to prevent overcrowding.

Recognizing these efforts, a team led by Additional Deputy Commissioner Jayanta Bora recently visited the market and appreciated the improvements. The District Administration, in partnership with the municipality, has set up garbage removal services. Payments have been arranged to continue the service, even though the market is outside municipal limits.

“This market used to be unruly, but now it’s becoming organised. We are grateful to have a proper elected body to oversee its functioning,” said a vendor, expressing satisfaction over the changes.

The FTMC now seeks the market’s recognition as a permanent commercial hub and plans to approach higher authorities regarding the matter. Serving as a vital alternative to hospital canteens, the market remains essential in meeting the needs of patients and visitors at FAAMCH.
