Assam: Barshashree Buragohain Appears For Semester Exam Under Tight Security in Golaghat Jail

GUWAHATI: Jailed for over two months, Barshashree Buragohain, an undergraduate student sat for her semester exam on Saturday (July 16) under tight security in Golaghat jail in Assam.

The development comes after the 19-year-old was granted permission by a court here to sit in the examination from the jail itself under tight security in Golaghat jail in Assam.

Barshashree Buragohain was arrested on May 18 from Uriamghat in Golaghat district and was charged under the UAPA for writing a poem titled ''Akou Korim Rashtra Droh'' (Will Again Rebel Against the Nation).

"Writing poetry is not bad. I also write poetry but Barshashree was apprehended only because she wrote that she will be joining ULFA," the DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said while speaking to reporters.

Notably, Barshashree's arrest, who is an undergraduate student of mathematics, has triggered widespread criticism across the state.

Supporting her, student bodies, opposition parties, and intellectuals demanded her early release.

On the other hand, Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) GP Singh in a Twitter post earlier, said, "There is a specific call to indulge in waging war against the State in her Facebook post. When someone publicly professes support for a banned organisation and declares the intent of waging war against the Indian state, we are legally bound to prosecute that person. Following due process, a chargesheet shall be filed in a competent court of law. Let the law take its own course".
