Assam: Bihu Venue In Abhayapuri Vandalized, Villagers Condemn ‘Assault on Culture’

BONGAIGAON: The New Deohati Rongali Bihu Sanmilan was struck by unidentified miscreants following a disturbing act of vandalism targeting a Bihu celebration venue in Abhayapuri in Assam's Bongaigaon district, leaving behind a trail of destruction and drawing harsh criticism from the community.

Preparations for the highly anticipated three-day Rongali Bihu celebration, which was scheduled to commence on April 14 and continue until April 16, were underway when the incident occurred.

However, the miscreants targeted the main entrance gate, shattering the festive ambience under the darkness. Additionally, the gamosa and the jaapi, which are highly valued as symbols of Assamese identity, were desecrated, and decorations were destroyed.

The village was engulfed in a wave of collective anger and protest the following day. At the devastated location, both men and women gathered, their voices united together to denounce the vandalism and call for prompt action.

A spokesperson for the Bihu organizing committee stated that “This is not merely damage to inanimate objects; it is a direct assault on our cherished culture and our inherent pride."

The Abhayapuri Police promptly arrived at the scene in response to the distress call and launched a thorough investigation into the incident. Seeking justice for the desecration, the Bihu Sanmilan organizing committee has formally registered a complaint at the Abhayapuri Police Station.
