SIVASAGAR: In a dramatic escalation of tensions in Upper Assam, police on Friday detained two leaders of the Bir Lachit Sena, Shrinkhal Chaliha, Central Administrative Secretary, and Har Kumar Gogoi, Organizing Secretary, while they were travelling towards Duliajan in Dibrugarh district to join a protest rally. The two leaders were accompanied by a convoy of over 50 members of the organization when they were intercepted in Sepon, between Sivasagar and Dibrugarh districts.

The group was reportedly enroute to participate in a demonstration demanding the arrest of Tanu Shahi, a case that has been making headlines over the past several days. Though the specific nature of the allegations against Shahi remains under investigation, the issue has already sparked multiple protests.

According to police sources, the detentions were made as a preventive measure, citing the possibility of a law and order situation arising from the gathering. Chaliha was taken to the Superintendent of Police’s office in Dibrugarh, while the remaining members of the group, including Gogoi, were held at Moran Police Station.

Meanwhile, news of the detentions triggered protests in Sivasagar within hours. Activists from the SC Students’ Union and members of the Bir Lachit Sena took to the streets and staged protests demanding the unconditional release of all detained leaders.
