Assam: Bishnu Rabha & Purushottam Das recalled at Barpeta

BARPETA: On Friday, on the occasion of Rabha Divas, Bishnu Prasad Rabha was remembered at various places of Barpeta district. Friday was the death anniversary of another artiste, lyricist of Barpeta, Purushottam Das.

These two great personalities of Assam, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Purushottam Das were remembered on Friday. The Kalaguru Foundation of Barpeta held a daylong programme in the memory of Purushottam Das and Bishnu Prasad Rabha. In this regard, flag hoisting was done and floral tributes were paid in the morning before the images of the artistes and a chorus performed to commemorate Purushottam Das and Bishnu Rabha.

In the evening, a group dance competition was organized on the songs of Bishnu Rabha. Manikankana Barman, HOD, Performing Arts Department, and Prasanta Rabha, Associate Prof (Assamese Dept), BH College, were the judges for this competition. Gunindra Nath Das, former MLA, Barpeta, was also present and delivered a short lecture on the life and works of Bishnu Prasad Rabha and  Purushottam Das.

A cultural show was also organized whereas all the noted artistes of Barpeta took part. The cultural programme was inaugurated by Kushan Choudhury, noted social worker. Earlier the lamp of the programme was lit by veteran journalist, Bishnu Rabha awardee, and literateur Akshay Kr Misra and Dr Tara Prasad Das, former MLA, Sarukshetry. In his speech, Misra said, “Bishnu Rabha is a living storm. Bishnu Rabha is a living procession.”

The cultural programme started with a chorus by the noted artists of Barpeta and the result of the dance competition was declared. In the group dance competition, Natyam Dance Academy bagged the first prize, the group of Kankanjit Patowary got the second, and the third prize went to Kalangan, Barpeta. The winning teams also performed in the cultural programme. Bishnu Rabha Divas was also observed at Barpeta College, Tantikuchi Sanskritik Gosthi, and all the schools of Barpeta.
