DIGBOI: Digboi BJP legislator Suren Phukan on Saturday morning inspected the ongoing drainage construction works in Digboi Charali Bazar along the NH 38 in Tinsukia district and said that the market is nobody’s personal property while handling the objections of a few indifferent businessmen of the area.

Dimpy Sonowal, the Vice Chairman of Digboi Municipality Board, Dibya Jyoti Dutta, Inspector, Digboi Police Station, Executive Officer Aniruddha Bora, Digboi along with contractors, engineers and public leaders accompanied the elected representatives.

According to Phukan, the drain project stretching from Charali Market to Ramnagar via Borbil area along the NH 38 covering a distance of nearly 3.5 kilometres has been funded by Chief Minister’s Corpus with an estimated amount of Rs 8 crores under the Signature project.

However, sounding alert to a few individual businessmen obstructing the progress in excavation infront of their business establishments, the MLA said that the businessmen themselves were providing scopes inviting the administration to deal the matter with an iron fist.

“Despite the fact that 90% of the impacted inhabitants have voluntarily supported the project and want to see the township hygienic, clean, and attractive with a high-quality slab drain, why did a few businessmen fail to put aside their greed?” wondered the legislator.

According to Phukan, the indifferent businessmen who are offering hurdles were only concerned about business expansion and their profits are least bothered about the overall progress of the Oiltown Digboi.

“On the other hand, the contractors and the executing agency have been striving commendably without compromising with the quality and specifications despite the inclement weather past few weeks,” said the legislator during his address at the site adding “Nearly a kilometre has already been finished smoothly.”

However, the legislator while expressing gratitude to the Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for the project assured that the work would be completed in two months come what may.

One of the people's long-held dreams, the scientific drainage system, not only turned out to be dangerous and a source of pollution and clogging, but it also caused significant traffic jams and challenges for market-goers and pedestrians because of the vendors' and businessmen's constant encroachment.
