DIBRUGARH: Buddha Purnima was celebrated at the Buddhist Temple at Graham Bazar in Dibrugarh on Monday with utmost devotion and religious fervour. Monks and devotees gathered to mark the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha, with prayers for world peace and victims of recent tragedies.
The day began with Sumedhananda Bhikkhu, the Chief Monk of the temple, hoisting the World Buddhist flag. Devotees then lit candles and lamps in front of the Buddha statue, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Monks in yellow and saffron robes led prayers attended by people of different faiths.
A special world peace prayer was held, remembering those affected by the Pahalgam terror attack and natural disasters in Myanmar and Thailand. Sumedhananda Bhikkhu spoke about Buddha’s teachings, especially the Panch Sheel or the five rules of good conduct.
Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, is celebrated to commemorate the significant events in the life of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. This includes his birth, enlightenment, and death, all believed to have occurred on the same full moon day of the Vaisakha month.
