ITANAGAR: A North Lakhimpur-based businessman has been arrested by the Sangram Police in Arunachal Pradesh's Kurung Kumey district on charges of cheating residents of lakhs of rupees in a false investment scheme.

The accused, Rahman Ali, had been running a business in Sangram for almost nine years. His journey of woes started when he first borrowed Rs 2.6 lakh from one of the locals, Tai Taba, on June 25, 2023, under a written agreement.

Ali is said to have gradually convinced Taba and a number of others to invest further amounts, promising them high returns. The amount involved is said to be approximately Rs 35 lakh.

The scenario took a dramatic turn on February 24, 2025, when Ali abruptly escaped Sangram along with his family and relatives, leaving the borrowed money unpaid and sending panic among the investors. This precipitated the registration of a criminal case at the Sangram Police Station (Case No. 03/25) under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code relating to cheating and dishonest inducement.

Following months of inquiry, the Sangram Police, in a coordinated raid, apprehended Ali on 8th May, 2025, from Mayong under Assam's Morigaon district. ASI Shanti Paleng coordinated the operation with the help of HC(SG) Tenjing Norbu and Constable Yomli Ninu.

Ali is now in police custody, and efforts are being made to retrieve the money defrauded and to find out any other victims or accomplices. Authorities have also called on anyone who has been affected by the scam to report information that can help with the investigation.
