SILCHAR: Following the deaths of two youths who were swept away by a sudden wave, the Cachar district administration restricted public access to certain tourist spots in the Sindura area under Katigorah revenue circle. On Sunday, a group of youths from Badarpur, in a bid to beat the heat, went to a vulnerable site near Sindura river, but unfortunately, one of them, identified as Bishal Ghose drowned as he failed to tackle a sudden wave. Another youth, Soubhik Sarkar, jumped into the river to save his friend. But both of them died. Soubhik’s decomposed body was recovered on Wednesday.

In this backdrop, the district administration issued a notice restricting public access to certain vulnerable sites near Sindura river. The move came in light of identified vulnerabilities at these sites due to inadequate safety measures, lack of infrastructure, and insufficient disaster management arrangements.

The District Commissioner, exercising powers under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, stated that allowing unrestricted public visits to these locations without proper safeguards poses a significant risk to visitors. .

According to the directive, the Circle Officer of Katigorah, block development officers of Kalain and Katigorah, along with the officers-in-charge of concerned police stations, outposts, and village defence parties, were tasked with strict enforcement of the order. Regular monitoring and reporting will be carried out by the in-charges of Kalain outpost and Katigorah police station to ensure complete compliance, and any violations will attract stringent action under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act and other relevant laws.
