The arrested persons were identified as Amal Paul, the main accused, Baktiar Hussain Laskar, Sanjib Ahmed Laskar, Dilwar Hussain Laskar and Saharul Islam Laskar. Cachar SP Numol Mahatta informed that these five miscreants had killed Bidhan Dutta, a truck driver hailing from Katlicherra in Hailakandi, and later whisked away with the vehicle from Churachandpur.
On January 8, a Guwahati-based trader Ram Bahadur Gupta lodged an FIR stating that the driver Bidhan Dutta had gone missing along with the vehicle on January 3 while transporting goods to Churachandpur. With constant efforts, Baktiar, Kachudram, Sanjib, and Dilwar were picked up and it was learnt from them that the stolen truck was kept concealed at the Assam-Mizoram Border. Amol Paul, a cousin of Bidhan, in connivance with Saharul, deliberately killed Bidhan Dutta out of an old grudge relating to a monetary transaction. The goods were sold to one Aseb Hussain Barbhuiya of Srikona for Rs 5,80,000. Accordingly, Aseb Hussain Barbhuiya of Srikona and Tafijul Hussain Barbhuiya alias Ramij, Kalain, were arrested.
