SILCHAR: In a significant breakthrough, Cachar Police have arrested the prime suspect in connection with an extortion case involving Rs 10 crore ransom demand from Jhandu Infratech Ltd., a highway construction company. The threat, made on 21st February 2025 by an individual claiming ties with the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), triggered an extensive investigation.

A company official received a threat call on February 21 from an unknown person claiming to be from the banned terrorist group. The caller allegedly demanded Rs. 10 crore, warning of dire consequences if the money was not paid. Following a complaint, Katigorah Police registered a case (No. 10/2025) and launched an investigation.

Initially, police arrested two accomplices, Md. Alekuddin and Ajiruddin, from Kalain, based on a tip-off. Further technical analysis and coordination with Meghalaya Police led to the capture of the main accused, Boktar Hussain, in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, along with his associate, Samsir Uddin Barbhuiya. Authorities recovered a mobile phone and SIM card used in the extortion attempt. Investigations are ongoing to uncover further links and potential threats.

Cachar SP Numal Mahatta confirmed that the suspects have no known terror links, stating, "From our primary investigation, they appear to be miscreants involved in coal smuggling and other illegal activities in Meghalaya." Two more suspects involved in the case are believed to be outside the state, and police are continuing efforts to apprehend them.
