Assam: Cannabis Worth Lakhs Seized in Hojai, Six Arrested

HOJAI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, after taking over the reins of the state from Sarbananda Sonowal in 2021, has taken a strict stand against drug peddling and has asked the police not to spare a single drug peddler in the state.

The mission to free the northeast of drugs is still on and in such a case the Assam Police on Sunday seized cannabis weighing 45 kilograms, which is said to be worth lakhs, in Assam's Hojai.

According to sources, the drugs were seized from a southbound passenger train.

Six peddlers were arrested by the Hojai Police, after a human intelligence tip-off they received earlier. The arrested persons are namely, Parimal Sarkar, Narottam Das, Haradhan Debnath, Krishna Sikari, and Samiran Das.

Hojai also witnessed a similar drug-related activity a few months ago this year in March, when Heroin worth 3 crores was seized from a Guwahati-bound train that was coming from the business hub of Nagaland, Dimapur.

Hojai's neighboring district Morigaon also witnessed a similar drug-related activity in April this year when drugs worth 4.5 crores were seized from a truck and a pickup van.

Northeast has gained a very bad name of being the drug corridor of the country as drugs from southeast Asia move through the northeast to other parts of India.

Assam is headed towards a drug-free future under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. CM Sarma, a few days ago in the ongoing Autumn session of the Assam Assembly said that the Assam Police seized drugs worth more than Rs.655 crores and arrested more than 4700 people across Assam in the previous year.

He also added that Assam Government will not show a lenient attitude towards the drug peddlers and will crack down on them heavily if they try to drug our youth.

The Assam government last year around this time took a very strong stand against drugs and burned contraband drugs worth many hundred crores in four locations of Assam that were selected for the burn-a-thon.
