MANGALDAI: The second day of the new year marked the death of a majestic full grown male one horned rhino in Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve (ONPTR) which has cast a pall of gloom over the hearts and minds of the entire staff, wildlife activists and the conservation communities.
“The frontline staff of ONPTR while carrying out morning patrolling duty, recovered the carcass of the rhino near Nichilamari anti-poaching camp with its horn intact at about 8.45 am on Thursday. From the field observation the cause of death has been ascertained as a natural death, however the report of the post mortem examination of the carcass is awaited,” said Divisional Forest Officer of Mangaldai Wildlife Division Pradipta Barua while talking to The Sentinel.
Mention may be made here that the ONPTR has successfully been maintaining zero poaching of the one horned rhinos in the park since 2018 which is the testament of the relentless effort and vigilance of the field staff.
