NAMRUP: The government of India has made a proposal to set up a new urea plant in Namrup, Assam, with an investment of Rs. 10,000 crore. The three-and-a-half-year period project will create about 1,950 direct and indirect jobs, according to Rajat Kumar Mishra, the Secretary of the Department of Fertilizers.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman referred to the commissioning of the Namrup urea plant in her Budget address for 2025-2026. Mishra stressed the importance of this project for the Northeast, declaring, "This is the most awaited project in the North East."

The new plant will produce 12.70 lakh tonnes of urea per annum to meet the fertilizer requirement of the Northeast and Eastern India. Mishra pointed out that if the demand allows, the excess production will be exported to the neighboring nations.

With the commissioning of the Namrup plant, India's overall urea production is expected to be 335 lakh tonnes, meeting 75-80% of the country's needs and substantially cutting dependence on imports. The plant will use local and imported natural gas for operations, and proposals are afoot to venture into the manufacture of nano and other high-tech fertilizer products.

Mishra also promoted balanced use of the fertilizers to boost farm productivity in a sustainable manner.
