SIVASAGAR: Charaideo Maidam, a historic landmark in the town of Charaideo, Assam, is a pyramidal burial site that holds the tombs of the Ahom Kings and other key figures from the Ahom dynasty.
On July 26, 2024, Charaideo Maidam was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a recognition made possible following a nomination by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023.
The Charaideo Festival was inaugurated by District Commissioner Neha Yadav, who emphasized the inclusion of Charaideo Maidam in the UNESCO World Heritage list brings recognition to Assam's rich cultural heritage. This honor is expected to enhance cultural exchange and stimulate the state's tourism industry.
The festival will be attended by the Deputy Minister from Laos and tourism officials from Malawi and Ghana and also Myanmar's Ambassador to India, Zaw Ooo, and his wife.
Meanwhile, earlier last year in November, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, visited the Charaideo Maidam after it was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the first such honour for any cultural site of the Northeast. Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, said, “Charaideo Maidam, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a remarkable testament to the architectural brilliance of the Ahom era, embodying the legacy of the revered ancestors. This historic achievement was made possible through the visionary efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi Dangoria.
The people of Assam remain deeply grateful to Modi Dangoria for bringing global recognition to this heritage. May the rich tradition of Charaideo Maidam continue to shine brightly, inspiring us with the timeless ideals of the great Ahom rulers and guiding our path in building a prosperous and culturally vibrant state.”
