GUWAHATI: In a major decision, the Assam government has made a one-time exception, offering free scooties to students attending coaching institutes this academic year.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that students who have passed Higher Secondary and are currently enrolled in coaching centers will be eligible for the two-wheeler scheme, provided they meet other criteria.
However, this policy will only apply to the current academic year. From the next academic year onwards, the free scooty benefit will be available only to students pursuing regular college courses, ensuring those in preparatory courses aren't left out this time.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister stated, "As a special dispensation, the Government of Assam has decided to provide a scooty to all students who have joined coaching centres instead of regular courses this year, after passing the Higher Secondary (HS) examination, provided they meet the eligibility criteria."
"However, from the next academic year, only students who enroll in regular courses will be considered eligible for the scheme. Students who join regular courses after a gap year will also become eligible for the scooty upon enrollment in a regular course," he added.
In December 2024, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that only girl students who pass the Higher Secondary Final Examination with 60% and boys with 75% or above, and enroll in government colleges, would be eligible for scooties.
