GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Ring Road, a flagship infrastructure project in Assam, is set to become a reality within the next four years. The project was awarded to a successful bidder on Thursday, just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the state later this month. As per reports, the Assam government is eager for PM Modi to lay the foundation stone during his visit, which is on February 24. However, this has not been officially confirmed yet.

The ring road will not only ease congestion in Guwahati but also serve as a bypass for traffic that does not need to enter the city. “Vehicles traveling from West Bengal or Bihar towards Silchar, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura will be able to bypass Guwahati entirely. This will greatly reduce traffic on the Guwahati bypass and the highway stretch up to Jorabat," an official said.

The tendering process for the Guwahati Ring Road was completed this week, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has officially awarded the project. An official said the ring road will reduce traffic on major highways around Guwahati and improve connections to important cities and towns like Siliguri, Silchar, Shillong, Jorhat, Tezpur, Jogigopha, and Barpeta.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the letter of acceptance in a post on X, stating, "Happy to share that @NHAI_Official has issued the Letter of Acceptance to the successful bidder for taking up work on the Guwahati Ring Road. From the conceptualisation stage to its imminent execution, this project is being driven at breakneck speed."

The Union Cabinet approved the Guwahati Ring Road in August 2024. It will be built under the Build-Operate-Toll (BOT) model. The project aims to improve traffic flow on National Highway (NH) 27, which is an important part of the East-West Corridor and a key route to Northeast India. It is one of Assam’s three major infrastructure projects, along with the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor and the underwater tunnel between Gohpur and Numaligarh.
