Assam Chief Minister's Entourage Will Be Cut in Half, Convoy to be Reduced to Only 7 Cars

GUWAHATI: When Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visits the city on Monday, his entourage will be trimmed in half.

The chief minister whose entourage has around 22-23 vehicles including escort, security and other officials' vehicles will be cut down to around seven to eight vehicles.

Sarma announced the adjustment on New Year's Day, claiming that the state cabinet decided to limit the number of automobiles in his convoy at a meeting on Saturday.

"It was decided to reduce the chief minister's entourage in the city to around 7-8 automobiles," he said. Even if a minister accompanies me on the journey, he or she is under no obligation to bring their own convoy into the city."

It was also decided that from now on, no past chief minister will be entitled to government housing or security.

"Every prior chief minister had been provided with a home and security protection. However, no past chief minister will be entitled to such rewards only because he or she served as chief minister during my term. Only if the person is thought to be a threat will the police provide security. The incentive will continue to be paid to prior chief ministers, but it will be tapered off in the future "Sarma said.
