Assam Chief Secretary reaches Hojai to take stock of flood preparedness

Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna on May 29 reached Hojai where he took stock of the flood situation in the wake of the recent flash floods in the state which have affected almost 3 lakh people and killed 2 persons in Goalpara.

Sanjay Krishna during his visit to the Lower Assam district reviewed the prevalent situation caused by the rising water level of the river Kopili. Additionally, he assessed the damages during his on-site visit. The Chief Secretary also visited a relief camp at the Singari Basti Lower Primary school and interacted with the camp inmates about relief measures.

According to officials, Sanjau Krishna also directed the Deputy Commissioner to keep an eye on uninterrupted supply of essential items such as food, water, and medicines at the relief camps to tide over the crisis. Later in the day, the Chief Secretary chaired a review meeting to this effect with the Hojai district administration. 

It needs mention here that Sadnek Singh, the Deputy Commissioner, apprised the Deputy Commissioner about both the flood and Covid-19 situation and measures taken to address these issues. Superintendent of Police Ankur Jain also informed the Chief Secretary about various steps taken by the police.

Additionally, the Chief Secretary also visited Nagaon to take stock of the prevailing situation from the Deputy Commissioner. He was accompanied by Moloy Bora, the Divisional Commissioner of Central Assam.

Flood situation in Assam: 

2,94,170 people across 9 Assam districts of Dhemaji, Nagaon, Hojai, Darrang, Nalbari, Goalpara, West Karbi Anglong, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia have been affected by floods in Assam during the first spate this year and 15,977 people have been driven to take shelter in 91 relief camps. Additionally, 1 more person from Goalpara was killed in the last 24 hours. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority's (ADSMA) daily report.

Goalpara district is the worst affected as 2,01,347 people across 161 villages have been affected by floods. At the same time, 21,572 hectares of crops in 8 districts have been affected in this spate of floods. Teams have already been deployed by the Government to rescue the flood-affected people, and so far, 24 boats have deployed and 492 persons have been rescued.
