GUWAHATI: In a surprising twist, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has revealed a six-year-literary scam in Assam, where it has been revealed that behind the pen name "Dr." Paridhi Sarmah" is Dhrubajyoti Saikia of Sivasagar. This came to light owing to the efforts of a local resident, Palash Ranjan Baruah, who helped the CID in its probe.
Saikia allegedly deceived editors, writers, and readers by impersonating a professor from Delhi University, complete with fabricated credentials and a stolen identity. To further his ruse, he used the photograph of a Karnataka IAS officer and maintained the illusion of authenticity by employing two different phone numbers and adopting a female voice during communications with editors and collaborators.
The CID inquiry revealed that Saikia had written many articles in different leading newspapers, earning him fame and admiration among literary circles. His varied writing style made it difficult for anyone to suspect his real identity. But extensive investigative work ultimately revealed the complex plot behind the pseudonym.
The case has also raised serious issues in Assam's literary community regarding vetting procedures and responsibility in publishing. While the CID is still investigating the scope of Saikia's scams, the authorities are also on the lookout for any possible accomplices in this elaborate scam. The investigation is focused on finding out how a so-called advanced fraud went undetected for so long.
