GUWAHATI: In a major breakthrough prior to the Assam panchayat elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has won 348 seats unopposed, with 325 of them going to the NDA's tally. Elections for the three-tier panchayat system will be conducted in two phases on May 2 and May 7, and the deadline for withdrawal of nominations is April 18.
CM Sarma detailed that the NDA has claimed 37 Zila Parishad seats—35 for the BJP and 2 for the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)—alongside 288 Anchalik Panchayat seats, which include 259 for the BJP and 29 for the AGP. Additionally, he noted that independent candidates have won 15 Anchalik Parishad seats, while the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) secured nine and one seat respectively.
“This unprecedented mandate reflects the trust and support the people of Assam have for the NDA and Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” the Assam CM stated. He expressed confidence that the final election results would further increase the NDA's tally.
The State Election Commission is expected to release the official count of uncontested seats on Saturday. The counting of votes for the panchayat elections will take place on May 11. Out of 34 districts in Assam, elections are being conducted in 27, as the remaining seven are under autonomous councils. Approximately 1.80 crore voters are eligible to participate in these elections.
