Assam: Closing function of Maharajat Jayanti of Charing SDP Girls High School

Maharajat Jayanti at SDP Girls HS celebrated women’s education with talks, seminar, and cultural events despite bad weather.

GAURISAGAR: “The promotion of women’s education in the history of Assam as well as in India is the result of each struggle, the result of each movement. Whenever a progressive society raises its voice strongly against the adoption of medieval masculine thinking, women’s educational institutions are created,” stated Utpal Sarma, President, All Assam Student Union (AASU) on Tuesday while inaugurating the open session of Maharajat Jayanti of SDP Girls High School.

Addressing the gathering, Sarmah analyzed the promotion, dissemination, and glorious history of women’s education in Assam. He said that in 1837, the wife of Nathan Brown, gathered 10 girls in Sadia in upper Assam and paved the way for women’s education. He added that in today’s context, the only concerns among students and parents are good education, good educational institutions, and decent employment.

The open session was presided over by Annada Dutta, President of the Reception Committee. In the meeting, Dr Anil Saikia, prominent folk culture researcher, prominent educationist, Orator Tuwaram Khanikar, Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, Inspector of Schools, Sivasagar district Debajyoti Gogoi, State Secretary, Assam Secondary Teachers and Employees Association Brajen Chetia,  Uday Dutta, Secretary, Adhibidya Parishad, Sivasagar, Dr Ranjit Kumar Baruah, Principal, Dikhowmukh College, took part as distinguished guests. At night, a cultural function was held and it was inaugurated by Samiron Phukan, General Secretary, All Assam Students’ Union.

On the other hand, on Monday, in the morning session, a colourful cultural procession was taken out throughout the locality despite bad weather a good number of students and public participated. Topon Kumar Gogoi, former MP, flagged it off. Thereafter, a seminar on the role of women’s power in building a progressive women’s society was held. “Only women can give the lessons of reforms to their child. Today most from the new generation in our society have turned to a wrong track. As a mother, we have some responsibility to set them on right path,” stated Dr Rita Borah, Associate Professor, Sivasagar University, while conducting a seminar on the role of women’s power in building a progressive women’s society, held on Monday on the eve of Maharajat Jayanti of SDP Girls High School,Charing.

Addressing the gathering, noted story writer Dr Borah said that women should teach their children the lesson of love, culture, and humanity. Where culture is not preserved, there is no civilization, she said. She also said that women have the utmost responsibility for preserving culture.

Dr Jyotirekha Hazarika, former professor and head, department of Assamese, JB College, Jorhat, took part as an appointed speaker. In her speech, she said that progressivism is about being able to empower yourself and others. She urged upon the girls to take everything from a scientific perspective. In her speech, Dr Bornali Bhuyan, Assistant Professor, SMD College, Charing, said that the mind is one of the causes of human progress and that one must have a strong mind to move forward in life.

The seminar was inaugurated by Dr Surajjyoti Gogoi, District Project Manager, Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission, Sivasagar. Earlier in the morning session, a colourful cultural procession was taken out through the locality despite bad weather. Tapon Kumar Gogoi, former MP flagged it off. In the procession, various cultural items of Assamese society were demonstrated. The scene of Operation Sindoor of the procession received wide attention. In the night, an artiste of Bedanta Kala Kendra performed sattriya dance. Noted social worker and former education secretary of AASU Sarat Hazarika inaugurated the cultural night.
