TEZPUR: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, during an interview in Tezpur on April 28, 2025, revealed plans to cut cooking gas prices by ₹300, bringing major relief to households across the state. He stated that the cost of a domestic LPG cylinder, currently at ₹950, would soon be reduced to ₹650.
He added,"I want the cylinder price to be more affordable, and we aim to make it ₹300 less which will be effective soon." Sarma stated, "We are working to make cylinders less expensive to ease the financial strain on citizens," expressing his commitment to affordability.
The planned price reduction is anticipated to benefit millions, making cooking gas more affordable amid escalating living expenses. Additionally, the state government is in the final stages of completing the implementation process, with the new rates expected to come into effect soon.
Earlier, the price of LPG cylinders has been increased by Rs 50 for both subsidized and non-subsidized consumers, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on April 7. The hike applies to both Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries. The revised prices will come into effect starting April 8.
“For PMUY beneficiaries, the price will rise from Rs 500 to Rs 550 per cylinder. For other consumers, it will increase from Rs 803 to Rs 853,” Puri said.
