GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a grand 12-day festival of development across the state, promising benefits to 12 lakh people.

This initiative will implement various welfare measures, such as the distribution of scooties to girl children, scholarships and bicycles to girl students, loan waivers for mothers, and financial assistance to flood-affected families.

"The women folks of Assam who have availed loans up to Rs 50,000 from financial institutions, the loan will be waived off by the state government with the settlement with the banks. In the next 12 days, the folks who have taken loans up to Rs 50,000 will be given 'no dues certificates' from the banks," stated the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, hundreds of women from the Nari Mukti Sangram Samiti (NMSS) gathered in Sivasagar town on Tuesday to voice their discontent over the state's alleged failure to fulfill its pre-election promise regarding the waiver of microfinance loans.

The protest comes in the wake of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's earlier announcement, where he declared that around 24 lakh women who have taken loans from microfinance institutions would benefit from the Assam Micro Finance Incentive and Relief Scheme 2021 (AMFIRS).

However, according to the protesters, the implementation of this scheme has been slow, and many women are still struggling with their financial challenges.
