DIPHU: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has fully backed the proposal for the establishment of a Greenfield Airport at the disputed PGR/VGR land in West Karbi Anglong's Kheroni put forth by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).
CM Sarma, while addressing a press briefing held today at Kajir Ronghangpi Guest House in Taralangso, Diphu, assured his full support for the Council’s initiative, highlighting the potential benefits that an infrastructure project of this magnitude could bring to the region.
However, concerns have been raised regarding this major proposal among some organizations, who have demanded eviction from the land in question.
The Assam CM responded to these demands by emphasizing the fact that the matter is currently sub judice. He said that the government cannot override the judgment of the High Court, adding that all actions must align with the legal process.
It is worth mentioning that the PGR (Professional Grazing Reserve) and VGR (Village Grazing Reserve) lands is going through a prolonged dispute with multiple claims and counterclaims pertaining to ownership and usage rights. The debate has been further intensified by the announcement of the airport project.
Depsite the controversy, the KAAC is committed to its decision, as the autonomous body has cited development, connectivity, and economic growth as the main factors behind the proposed Greenfield Airport.
