Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal conveyed his greetings to the media fraternity on the occasion of National Press day on Monday.

He tweeted, "Heartiest greetings to my friends from the media fraternity on #NationalPressDay. I salute your undaunted role in this testing period of #COVID19 and believe that you will continue to be conscience keepers of the society."

"A vigilant media is a prerequisite to keep a democratic society robust and healthy. The media must make the government accountable before the public and constructive criticism is necessary to keep the government on track. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the media persons always stayed at the forefront and did not shy away from their duties to get news for people, even at the risk of their health." Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said today while addressing at the state level programme of National Press Day 2020 organized by the Information and Public Relations Department, Govt of Assam at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati. He too was grateful to the media for its constant support to the state government in the campaign against corruption and urged the media to highlight the state government's initiatives to protect the natural environment of Assam and motivate the youngsters to contribute to this mission. 

November 16 is observed as National Press day to mark the establishment of Press Council of India (1966). This day is observed as the symbol of the free and responsible press in our country.
