GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has brought attention to the historical challenges faced by the northeastern state while projecting a positive economic outlook for the future.

In a post on X, CM Sarma stated, "Did you know Assam had serious legacy issues? We bore the brunt of partition, the state was divided five times, and we lost our capital." He emphasized that it was only after 2014 that the Government of India began to focus on integrating Assam into the national mainstream.

In a press interaction, the Assam CM spoke at length about the woes of the state, citing its landlocked location and the effect of militancy. He said that Assam has been divided five times after independence, whereas West Bengal has been undivided since partition. "Assam is the only state in India that has been deprived of her own capital," he stated, lamenting the lack of compensation for the loss.

CM Sarma attributed decades of neglect to the state's developmental challenges, stating, "Post-1947 till 2014, nobody wanted to take care of Assam." Despite these historical setbacks, he expressed optimism about the state's economic prospects, claiming that Assam has attracted more investment than West Bengal.

"Bengal must have attracted around 4.4 lakh crore proposals, but we must have crossed more," he asserted, promising to provide specific figures at an upcoming press conference. While acknowledging Bengal's significance, Sarma maintained that Assam's growth should not be overlooked.
