MAJULI: The Union Government has been encouraged by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to push for Majuli, the largest river island in the world, to be added to the esteemed UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

On November 27, while addressing the International Tourism Mart that is taking place at Kaziranga, CM Sarma said, “Going ahead I would request India's Union Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to acknowledge Majuli's nomination into the UNESCO world heritage site list.”

Famous for its monasteries, or satras and founded by the saint-scholar Srimanta Sankardeva in the fifteenth century, Majuli is situated on the mighty Brahmaputra River. In addition, the island is home to many ethnic cultures and distinctive farming methods that represent peaceful cooperation with the natural world.

Climate change, infrastructure constraints, and river erosion have all posed difficulties for Majuli over the years. Its rich cultural heritage and delicate ecosystem may receive more international attention and funding if it is included to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The Assam government initiated a number of actions to increase Majuli's visibility, including better connectivity, ecotourism campaigns, and sustainable development projects, which are followed by this request.

In order to increase India's cultural representation on UNESCO's prestigious list, CM Sarma expressed confidence that the Union Government will support Majuli's cause on international stages.

Assam would reach a major milestone if Majuli were to be included, joining the ranks of other famous Indian sites that have been acknowledged by UNESCO for their international significance.
