GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has clarified that there are no restrictions on pork sales and slaughter in Guwahati except for general hygiene and sanitation regulations.

Clarification was made on January 9 due to public outcry in view of a recent circular issued by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation. He said, "If there is a circular to put some restrictions, then it would be withdrawn.".

Through his official Twitter handle, CM Sarma has highlighted how pork is an integral part of the cultural and culinary scene in Assam, more so among tribal communities and other groups of locals.

He said, "Pork is a dearly cherished delicacy for our tribal population as well as many other communities in our region. It reflects a rich cultural and culinary heritage.". In Guwahati, there is no restriction on the sale or slaughter of pork, provided hygiene and sanitary standards are upheld. The Assam government is dedicated to safeguarding the traditions and rights of all communities while ensuring public health and safety.

Earlier, the GMC had issued a directive to slaughter pigs only in government-approved slaughterhouses for pork sales. This move had raised a lot of concern over its impact on traditional practices. By intervening, CM Sarma has demonstrated the state government's dedication to maintaining cultural customs while enforcing public health policies.

The Chief Minister's assurance is meant to dispel the fears of the community that the government is valuing its cultural heritage as well as the welfare of its citizens.
