JORHAT: Several innovative additions have been made to the infrastructure of the Jorhat district with Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurating three important projects at a total cost of Rs 110.77 crore today.
The CM first inaugurated the Conference Centre (Sanmilan Bhawan) constructed under the Urban Infrastructure Development Fund at a cost of Rs 19.98 crore at Cinnamara here. The centre has 120 seats and a meeting room and was built at a cost of nearly Rs 20 crore. Dr Sarma said that the opening of the centre will help the district administration and the people of Jorhat to organize various functions at the place.
The conference centre has a total area of 5 bighas and a house area of 3,118 sq m. It includes one executive room, one media room, an entrance hall, one dining room, 2 presidential suites, and 5 suite rooms. “This state-of-the-art convention centre will surely add a new dimension to the modern urban infrastructure of the district,” the CM said.
The Chief Minister next opened the first automated testing center for Upper Assam and the second in the state. “The Automated Vehicle Fitness Testing Station, which is based on the developed countries of the world, will play a unique role in making the dream of Digital India of the Prime Minister of India a reality,” Dr Sarma said.
The centre, which was inaugurated today, is one of the five advanced technology centres set up under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the corporation and the Spanish company ‘Applus It euve India’ in public private mode.
The CM said that the automated testing station at the inter-state bus station, the pride of Assam, has ushered in a new era. The automated testing centre covers the four districts of Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo and has been built at a cost of Rs 12.5 crore.
The inauguration of the automated testing centre will also provide a far-reaching system for vehicle suitability certification for Jorhat and neighbouring districts. Built with state-of-the-art technology, the automated testing centre is fully automated, efficient and safe, resulting in accurate proof of suitability of vehicles in a short period of time and is sufficient for accident prevention and road safety. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the second rail overbridge in the district.
The two-lane overbridge on the north eastern railway line from near Jorhat Medical College on the north of Kamarbandha Ali to near the gate of Mission Hospital on the south will facilitate communication between the people of Jorhat town and neighbouring Golaghat district.
“There is a lot of traffic on both sides of the railway gate, and there is no limit to the suffering of the helpless passengers waiting in long queues. The project will benefit patients from far and wide to reach important health services in Jorhat like Jorhat Medical College, Jorhat Cancer Care Centre, and Mission Hospital and for students from several educational institutions including Assam Agricultural University,” the CM said.
It is worth mentioning that the airport will be easily accessible to tourists as well as ordinary passengers coming from Rowriah airport. The CM added that the bridge will also facilitate tourists to visit the ambitious Freedom Movement Park under construction covering the Jorhat Central Jail.
The flyover was constructed at a total cost of Rs 78.27 crore with equal partnership of the state government’s own funds and the Railway Department in the 2020-21 fiscal year. Work on the main section of the flyover started in January 2022 and ended in March 2025 after passing through various challenges. The flyover has a total length of 581.20 metres and a length of 74 metres above the railway line.
The CM further announced that Jagannath Barooah College would soon become a University with the appointment of a vice-chancellor in April. He also announced a second railway overbridge at Lahoty and another bridge over the Bhogdoi River.
