DIBRUGARH: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma convened an important meeting with representatives of Sodou Axom Matak Sanmilan, All Assam Matak Students Union, Matak Mahila Parishad and Matak Yuva-Chatra Sanmilan at the CM Secretariat in Dibrugarh on Saturday.

Several significant demands of the Matak community were discussed during the meeting where the granting of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status was the main agenda.

During the meeting, the representatives requested the Assam government to accelerate the process of granting ST status to the Matak community.

Moreover, they also demanded the construction of Matak Bhawan in Guwahati, more reservation for women in the Matak Autonomous Council and the issuance of Permanent Resident Certificates (PRC) to Matak residents in Arunachal Pradesh.

The meeting also addressed concerns pertaining to infrastructure development, with demands for the construction of flyovers at Panitola, Makum and Chabua along with the upgradation of Sarbananda Singha stadium in Tinsukia.

The community have also demanded for the setting up of small-scale cold storage units to support farmers.

Furthermore, cultural preservation was also prioritized with appeals for the promotion of Gostolor Bihu and the protection of Matak Royal Heritage. The delegation also sought land allocation in Tinsukia for establishing the central office of the All Assam Matak Students' Union and the restoration of Matak heritage properties.
