SILCHAR: As part of a major crackdown against illegal activities, authorities at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) have arrested a middleman who was allegedly selling medical supplies on hospital premises at inflated prices.

The suspect, Yadam Tanti, was apprehended by Deputy Superintendent Rituraj Thakuria near the dialysis unit, bringing the incident to light. The police found Tanti carrying a substantial quantity of medical equipment, including catheters, and was allegedly attempting to negotiate a sale with a patient's family. Acting swiftly, Dr. Thakuria detained Tanti, who was later handed over to the police for further investigation.

According to SMCH Superintendent Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, the presence of middlemen—commonly referred to as “dalaals”—has been a recurring problem within the hospital.

Addressing the media, Dr. Gupta revealed that a tip-off regarding suspicious activity on the premises led to the arrest. During interrogation, Tanti reportedly confessed to being involved in the illegal sale of medical supplies for the past three to four months. He also disclosed the names of drug distributors and medical shop owners allegedly connected to the racket.

Dr. Gupta urged patients and their families to come forward and report such activities to strengthen the case against those exploiting vulnerable patients.
