GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged nations to re-evaluate their travel advice that designate Assam and the North-eastern states as "restricted areas," pointing out that the region has been devoid of militant activity and violence for the previous five years.
On Wednesday, addressing the 12th International Tourism Mart (ITM) in Kaziranga, CM Sarma emphasised the problem of widespread misunderstandings that still have an impact on North-eastern tourism.
He stated, “In Assam, we have not experienced any militant activities or violence in the last 5 years. Yet, many countries still list northeastern states in restricted categories in their travel advisories. Countries like America and Japan have put some kind of question mark for their citizens visiting the Northeast."
He added that in order to alter these outdated beliefs, he is in close communication with many embassies and is seeking the help of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
CM Sarma underlined that debunking these myths is essential to drawing international visitors to the Northeast.
He added, “We are in constant touch with the embassies and seeking the help of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Changing the perception is very important. Perception management is very important before we can increase international tourist footfall in the region.”
It should be noted that in addition to the US and the UK, a number of European nations have classified the North-eastern part of India as dangerous and advised its nationals to travel there with great caution or not at all.
