GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed party MLA's to efficiently carry out government beneficiary programs and guarantee that the most disadvantaged sections of society receive the benefits. The state will hold panchayat elections this year, and an assembly election is scheduled for 2026.
In a recent meeting with the party MLAs, he discussed about panchayats and the upcoming Assembly elections. In the panchayat elections, the Chief Minister has advised the MLAs to highlight their outstanding performances.
"Ticket distribution in the 2026 Assembly polls will be determined by the performance in the panchayat elections in the constituencies," he stated.
Additionally, the Chief Minister stated that certain MLAs might not receive tickets for the Assembly elections.
Chief Minister Sarma also refuted allegations of a Hindu influx from Bangladesh, asserting that state security forces have not identified any Hindu Bangladeshi infiltrators over the past five months.
"In response to the turmoil in Bangladesh, we have placed the security forces at the international border on high alert to prevent infiltration," CM Sarma stated. "No Hindu infiltrator from Bangladesh has been apprehended in the past five months, despite the fact that the authorities have found a sizable number of illegal immigrants every day at the international border," he added.
He further added, "The majority of the Hindu community members who wished to cross the border and enter India arrived here thirty or forty years ago. Despite widespread atrocities in its neighbour, Bangladesh, the remaining minority population has continued to reside there." He went on to say, "I suppose they have their own reasons for remaining there—perhaps a love of the land or patriotism towards Bangladesh."
