GUWAHATI: Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah announced a major reshuffle of party office-bearers in all districts across the state for February, in advance of the 2024 assembly elections.

Of the total number of office-bearers in the state currently, around 90% would be replaced as a result of performance, loyalty, and capability assessments made over the past three-and-a-half years.

Borah has stated that it would be at all levels - booth to the state level- with the view of rejuvenating the party's structure. Central leadership of Congress has given their nod for the reorganization process. He recalled how the party has had a terrible past, particularly after successive election losses, wherein many MLAs and leaders joined the BJP. But Borah is optimistic that the political atmosphere has changed; more people have come back to Congress.

The reshuffle process will begin with booth-level changes, based on inputs from district-level political affairs committees (PACs). Borah also discussed the upcoming panchayat elections, clarifying that no statewide alliance would be formed. Instead, district units have been authorized to make decisions on potential alliances with anti-BJP parties at the local level.

Borah stated that the Congress was considering uniting opposition forces against the BJP in anticipation of the 2026 assembly elections. Candidates will be chosen by the party according to their potential for winning, loyalty, and ideological fit. In order to interact with voters across the state, he added, several yatras would be planned.
