Assam: Construction Of Highway Between Numaligarh To Dibrugarh Progressing Steadily

GUWAHATI: The four-lane highway from Numaligarh to Dibrugarh is being built steadily. The latest updates show that the Numaligarh to Jorhat stretch (39.7 km) is fully complete, while other sections are still being developed.

The Jorhat to Jhanji stretch (37.8 km) is 57.33% complete. The Jhanji to Demow section (44 km) is 23.09% complete. The Demow to Moran Bypass stretch (26.9 km) is 78.46% complete, while the Moran Bypass to Bogibeel Junction in Dibrugarh (19.1 km) is 62.27% complete.

The project aims to enhance connectivity in Upper Assam and it has been ongoing for a long time, with several deadlines extended. 

During Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s visit to Dibrugarh for Republic Day celebrations, he promised that the highway would be finished before the 2026 state assembly elections. 

Meanwhile, earlier last week, hundreds of members from the All Assam Students' Union and local residents gathered at Majuli on Friday to form a human chain, protesting the stoppage of construction on the much-needed Majuli-Jorhat bridge over the Brahmaputra River. The construction of this vital infrastructure project had been suspended for the past five months without any clear future prospects, which triggered the protest.

The 8.25-kilometre long two-lane bridge was planned to connect Majuli — the world's largest river island — to Jorhat on the south bank of the Brahmaputra. With a total cost of Rs. 925.47 crore, it was expected to create a strong connectivity link and boost the regional economy.
