Guwahati: Assam police on Wednesday shot down a cow smuggler while he was trying to escape from custody in the state's kokrajhar district.

As per reports, the accused named Adam Ali also has links with the Bangladesh-based terrorist organization Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen.

The police opened fire at a place between Bashbari village and Rupsi in Assam's Kikrajhar district.

''A police team had gone to Sagolia, near the Assam -West Bengal border, at 1:30 am on Wednesday to catch Ali. After seeing the police, the accused tried to run away and crossed the border into West Bengal and eventually the police caught him near Cooch Behar,'' SP Gaurav Abhijit Dilip said.

''The police team was ambushed and Ali tried to flee following which the police also opened fire at him. The accused was immediately taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead,'' the SP added.

As per the SP, Ali was previously apprehended in connection with five different cases, including cattle smuggling as well as arms smuggling.
