DOOMDOOMA: A search operation was launched in Doomdooma Co-District on Tuesday against the sale of Chinese garlic in the market. As per directive of Co-District Commissioner Nuzhat Nasreen, a team of officials comprising Assistant Commissioner Sudip Gogoi, Food, Public Distribution and Civil supply Inspector Pranab Jyoti Bhuyan and Food Safety Inspector Rishi Chikar, conducted the operation in Doomdooma, Rupaisiding, and Phillobari markets against the sale of Chinese garlic which is injurious to health due to high pesticides content.

It is learnt that the pulps of these garlics are bigger and uniform in size having less pungent odour, eye burning, much whiter and bright looking, and cheaper than that of those produced in India. These are reportedly smuggled from China clandestinely and sold in black market. Because of the profit-making motive of the sellers and its availability at a cheaper price, it has been able to capture the wide market. It has therefore posed a health hazard to people.

Acting on tip off, a large-scale operation has been launched by the State Government in different parts of Assam. The objective is to trace the wholesalers who are primarily responsible for this illegal trade.

On one hand, it has posed a health problem while on the other its sale is going on at the loss of huge government revenue on the other. When contacted, one of the officers said that the purpose is to primarily create public awareness and bring the culprits to book.
