Assam: Dhubri District BJP celebrates 515th birth anniversary of Mahabir Chilarai

The 515th birth anniversary of Mahabir Chilarai was centrally celebrated under the auspices of Dhubri District BJP at Lakhimari High School premises here with a day-long programme today.

DHUBRI: The 515th birth anniversary of Mahabir Chilarai was centrally celebrated under the auspices of Dhubri District BJP at Lakhimari High School premises here with a day-long programme today. In the programme, art, dance, and speech competitions were held, followed by a colourful cultural event. Apart from this, 16 prominent persons, who contributed in various fields, were felicitated with citation.

Addressing the attendees, Chairman of Assam State OBC Morcha and party’s former legislator of Golokganj Ashwani Roy Sarkar spoke at length on various aspects of Chilarai.

“Assam cannot forget the contribution of Maharaja Naranarayan and Mahabir Chilarai of Coochbehar as they had sheltered and patronised Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev and it was there that he had written a numerous books, continued preaching vaishnavite and enriched Assam language and culture, restored the Maa Kamakhya Temple, created spinning Brindavani bastra (textile) and so on. Though Naranarayan and Chilarai had contributed a lot in various fields for this part of Assam, they are yet to get true recognition and honour from Assam. However, efforts are being made to uphold their philosophy, works, and contribution by the Central and State Government,” Roy Sarkar added.

As appointed speakers, Assistant Prof of Progoti College Dr Poromeshwar Roy and Prof (Rtd) Dr Protima Neogi threw light on the life, works, and contribution of Maharaja Naranarayan and Mahabir Chilarai.

Others who attended and spoke in the celebration meeting were Dhubri District BJP President Prosenjit Dutta, Party In-Charge Dhubri District Anup Barman, and Chairman of Dhubri-Gauripur Development Authority Dipak Kumar Saha.
