GUWAHATI: In a Jagiroad tragedy in Assam, 42-year-old daily wage labourer Raju Harijan lost his life as a result of a fight over a packet of biscuits worth only ten rupees.
The fight was on the evening of April 7th when Harijan had been employed by Kundal Deori from Kanabori village to make a boundary fence.
Following a day of work, Deori allegedly gave Harijan ten rupees for tea and biscuits. Harijan, however, demanded double the amount, which resulted in a heated argument between the two men. The argument turned physical, with allegations that Deori physically assaulted Harijan several times, leaving him badly injured and unconscious.
Rather than taking Harijan to a medical facility, Deori reportedly put him in an e-rickshaw and sent him home in a state of semi-consciousness. After Harijan's condition was realized to be serious, his family took him to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he died on April 11th.
Harijan's family has alleged against Deori for not coming to their aid when informed of the victim's critical condition. In retaliation, they, along with relatives, brought Harijan's body to the Jagiroad police station, insisting for Deori's immediate arrest and legal action. This incident has sparked outrage in the local community, raising concerns about the increasing violence over trivial disputes and prompting calls for justice and preventive measures from authorities.
