MANGALDAI: In a unique initiative to preserve the traditional ‘Darrangi Biya Geet’ (Wedding songs of Darrang) which are on the verge of extinction, a exponent of the folk culture of Darrang, Hiranya Prabha Nath, under the banner of Srishti Production, ceremonially released the ‘Darangi Biya Geet’ on YouTube at Mangaldai. In the function, hosted by artiste Pranjal Sharma, at Mangaldai Youth Club on April 26, distinguished dancer Bhanu Deka Saharia unveiled the wedding songs sung in authentic Darrang dialect. “Nowadays, wedding songs are rarely heard at marriage ceremonies. Due to lack of practice, these songs are gradually disappearing,” said Bhanu Deka Saharia.
Inspired by folk artist Bhadra Kanta Nath, Hiranya Prabha Nath has collected these songs and preserved them using modern technology, which is truly a commendable effort. Taking part in the function, distinguished artiste Dr Anima Choudhury emphasized the need to connect the new generation with their cultural roots, stating, “Darrang is rich in folk culture, and it is this culture that gives Darrang its unique identity. We do not want this folk culture to vanish.” Dr Bijay Kumar Sharma and Dr Ramchandra Deka, retired vice-principal of Sipajhar College, in their speeches, added that Hiranya Prabha Nath, born into a culturally rich family, has further honed her talent under the guidance of artiste Bhadra Kanta Nath.
The event was attended by Dr Prasanna Kumar Nath, Kamal Choudhury, Rajib Kumar Deka, General Secretary of Mangaldai Youth Club, senior folk music artiste Bhadra Kanta Nath, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, music director Kamal Krishna Baruah, and senior journalist Ganesh Datta. Notably, the ‘Darangi Biya Geet’ features vocals by distinguished artiste Dr Anima Choudhury, Hiranya Prabha Nath, Haripriya Kalita, Anima Saharia, Papi Saharia, Sarala Devi, and others. The music has been directed by Kamal Krishna Baruah, with music arrangement by Hirak Jyoti Nath.
