DIGBOI: The demise of Avatar Neog (81 years), a household name in Bordirok - Hunjan area under Bordumsa Police Station in Tinsukia district, was widely mourned here today.
Late Neog, a retired Headmaster of Bordirok MV School, also known for his repute as the first matriculate of the area and the first student to enroll himself in Doomdooma College, breathed his last on Wednesday late evening at his Hunjan based residence close to Assam-Arunachal border in Tinsukia district.
“Our father was suffering from old age related ailments and was being taken care of at home a couple of days after clinical discharge from a private nursing home in Dibrugarh,” informed Monoranjan Neog, son of the deceased.
People from all walks of society, including the press fraternity across the district and Moran social activists and scholars, paid rich tributes, condoling the demise of late Neog, the founding president of present Moran Student Body of the district.
Arunjyoti Moran, former President of Moran Student Union and Chief Executive of Moran Autonomous Council, while talking to the Sentinel, expressed his condolences terming the loss as ‘irreparable for the community.’ He wished that the youth section of the society might emulate the lofty ideals and principles of late Avatar Neog while serving the society in true spirits.
Tinsukia District Information and Public Relations also expressed solidarity beside extending condolences upon the loss of Mr Neog, a prominent figure.
Sharing the educational background of his father, Manoranjan Neog, a local journalist cum founding President of Assam Press Correspondent Union Tinsukia district Chapter, said that his father was the first matriculate in the area.
Soon upon appearing for the matriculation examination in 1967, he devoted himself to teaching at Kailashpur LP School wherein he had received Rs 10 as his first honorarium, raised locally by the people.
“Thereafter, he was invited by people of nearby villages like Hunjan, Bordirok, Kakopather, Pengaree, etc., due to his growing popularity as a teacher,” said the bereaved son. He finally superannuated from his service in March 2007 as Headmaster.
The entrance gate of Doomdooma College has also been dedicated in his name, inscripted as ‘Avatar Neog being the first student of the college.’
Late Avatar’s pioneering contributions in community service was also recalled with pride.
